My husband and I have always had the type of the relationship that isn’t smothered in ooey gooey “I love you”s and cliché romantic gestures. I’m not a touchy feely/overly emotional person by nature and I married someone that isn’t either. We’re very sarcastic and we take nothing seriously, so we always find it funny when people comment about how we interact with one another. Here’s the deal… we just like to do things our own way. lol.
Valentine’s Day is no exception in our house. Although we went skiing together and had a nice dinner yesterday, our gifts to one another were not your traditional sentimentally-fluffed purchases. My favorite part of my present to Chad was my handmade card, which I had to share… simply because it makes me laugh every time I look at it
We both share a deep love for Lady Gaga. Yes, she is a bit over the top…but her music is fabulous. So, after having a debate over what she means by a “bad romance,” the idea of a Lady Gaga inspired handmade Valentine crept into my head. Ta-da!
What elements of this card make it an all time favorite of mine? 1.) The picture of Lady Gaga. Although everything she wears is outrageous, this is one of the best ensembles to date. 2.) The lyrics from Monster; they are ridiculous. 3.) The schizophrenic magazine-style cutouts.
I know not everyone will be producing a Lady Gaga Valentine from this. However, I think the idea is a good one. Nothing says “I love you” more than something handmade. Focusing on something you have in common or share a love for makes it even more special. Even though my husband and I clearly have a bizarre sense of humor… for Chad, this was a perfect Valentine.
I promised I would report on all of the projects I made over the weekend, so here goes. My friend Claudia spent the day with me on Saturday when we were trapped indoors by a massive snow storm (18 inches!) She is not as crazy about crafting as me (politely put, she thinks I’m a bit looney), but I managed to force her to create a few projects while she was with me.
To get in the Valentine’s Day spirit, we started with small throw pillows based on this project I’ve posted previously about. Since I was tailoring our pillows for the crafting novice (cough, Claudia, cough), we used a 12 by 12 inch piece of scrapbook paper for a basic pillow pattern. We used white fleece as the fabric and cut four squares each to make two pillows. Then, we used 5 varying shades of felt for the hearts. We used my Cricut to cut out our heart patterns. I used the Accent Essentials shape cartridge and made the largest heart 6 1/2 inches. I reduced the heart size by 1/4 inch each time I cut a new one for a total of 5 different sizes. Other than those few modifications, we just followed CraftyPod’s great tutorial.
Although she looked like she was playing tortured seamstress in a sweatshop while making them… Claudia was very pleased and proud of her final products. She also made the scarf she’s wearing, but I’ll save that for another day!
Last week was SUPER busy at work and I had no time for crafting or cooking. Thankfully this weekend brought 18 inches of snow and plenty of time to hang out inside and create :) I have lots of projects to share but I wanted to start this week off with a new recipe I tried out yesterday. Our friends Sarah and Dan had everyone over to watch the Super Bowl and I made Cinnamon Caramel Snack Mix and Buffalo Chicken Dip. The Cinnamon Caramel Snack Mix was a hit! Here is my recipe version for it:
Cinnamon Caramel Snack Mix
- 4 c. plain, air popped pop corn
- 4 c. Corn Chex
- 2 c. pretzel sticks
- 2 c. Cheerios
- 1 can mixed nuts
- 1 1/2 c. brown sugar
- 1/2 c. butter
- 1/2 c. light corn syrup
- 2 tsp. vanilla
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 12 oz. bag of chocolate chips
Mix popcorn, Corn Chex, pretzels, Cheerios and nuts in a roaster pan; set aside. Heat sugar, butter and syrup to boil; reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla, baking soda and cinnamon. Pour over cereal mixture and stir good. Bake at 250 degrees for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Spread out on wax paper to cool. Melt chocolate over double boiler and drizzle over top of mix. When cooled, break up into smaller pieces and enjoy!
Hooray for the one month anniversary of my blog! As The Modern Lady, I have posted 18 entries in the last 31 days and opened The Modern Lady store on Etsy (currently filled with aprons – oh how I love aprons). I’m so excited to see the interest grow more and more everyday and I truly appreciate all the comments to date! This blog pushes me to keep up the creativity and challenge myself at new domestic endeavors … and I only see greater things to come :)

- After a rough weekend of babysitting my poor kittens who were recovering from spay and declaw procedures, I was so thankful my mom offered to make dinner and bring it over our house tonight. The only items I was responsible for were the rolls and dessert. Rhodes delivered on the rolls and I referred to my trusty Angels and Friends Favorite Recipes cookbook for a quick dessert. ( The Angels and Friends Favorite Recipes cookbook is the BEST!!!! I have all three books in the collection and some of my favorite recipes come from them. They make the perfect gift for a wedding shower or house warming and 100% of the proceeds go to support Easter Seals of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. )
- Located in the “Salads and Salad Dressings” section, Apricot Salad (or what my family calls Apricot Fluff), was my sweet treat of choice. This jello-based dessert is great year round, but my family always makes it as a light refreshing side at holidays. I personally like it when the cream cheese is slightly chunky but if you prefer to whip it into a heavenly apricot state it will melt in your mouth!

1 6-ounce package apricot jello
1 8-ounce package cream cheese (room temperature)
1 large Cool Whip
1 No. 2 can crushed pineapple (in juice)
Mix jello with two cups hot water and the juice of the drained pineapple. Bring to boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Cool. Refrigerate until slightly thickened. Add softened cream cheese, pineapple, and Cool Whip. Fold together and pour into 9 x 13 pan or a mold.
